Former Residence of Soong Ching Ling, Honorary President of the People’s Republic of China
The Former Residence of Soong Ching Ling, Honorary President of the People’s Republic of China, is located on the north bank of the Houhai Lake in Shichahai, Beijing, covering an area of 22,000 square meters. It was originally the garden attached to the palace of Zaifeng, the Imperial Prince Chun, father of Puyi, the last Emperor of the Qing Dynasty. In 1961, personally overseen by Premier Zhou Enlai, it was decided to have a two-storied building built here. The No. 2 national flag was hoisted in the courtyard, which was unqiue among residence of domestic leaders. Soong Ching Ling moved here in 1963, and lived and worked until her passing away on May 29, 1981. In September of the same year, the site was named of "Former Residence of Soong Ching Ling, Honorary President of the People’s Republic of China" by the Secretariat of the Central Committee of CPC. On May 29 of the following year, the CPC Central Committee, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and the State Council held a grand ceremony here, where Deng Yingchao, Liao Chengzhi, Xi Zhongxun and other party and state leaders attended the unveiling ceremony.
The Former Residence of Soong Ching Ling inherits and carries forward the lofty ideals of Soong Ching Ling, and pursue its cause under the principle of "peace, reunification and future". It serves as "treasure house of cultural relics, research institutions, propaganda positions and exchange platforms". It often receives visits from heads of state and political leaders, and undertakes important meetings such as the APEC Finance Ministers' Meeting and the 160th Bergedorf Round Table for many times. It is an important place for central ministries and commissions, enterprises and public institutions and primary and secondary schools to carry out foreign exchanges, Party and League building, and practice activities. It has become a national patriotic education demonstration base, a national youth education base, a national research and practice education base for primary and secondary school students, an ideological education base for central state organs, and a clean government education base in Beijing.
As the birthplace and directly subordinate unit of the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation, the Former Residence of Soong Ching Ling will be in accordance with the requirements of the Eighth Council, under the strong leadership of the Party Group of the Foundation. It will thoroughly implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's congratulatory letter to the Foundation on the 40th anniversary of its establishment, with Soong Ching Ling 's belief of "we will always stand with the Party", grasp the theme of the times, give play to its unique advantages, and strive to make new contributions to promoting the great unity of Chinese people at home and abroad and realizing the Chinese dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
